Med-Tech Innovation

Overview

Israel has long been at the forefront of innovation in medicine, developing groundbreaking, often live-saving, treatments for a range of conditions, from cancer to diabetes, Parkinson’s disease to hernias.

When COVID-19 struck, hundreds of Israeli companies embarked on groundbreaking research, joining the global effort to understand more about the new virus, reliably diagnose, monitor and treat it, and to develop a vaccine. In what became effectively the largest clinical trial in the world, Israel has since led the world in the percentage of its population that has been vaccinated, with 45% having received the third dose by December 2021, compared to the world average of 3.7%.

The urgency and huge scale of the pandemic demanded not only innovation and top-quality research; effective management was required to streamline results, carry out proper clinical trials, and get products to the market as soon as possible. The ability of the Israeli medical system to develop and roll out such treatments in a timely way is thanks to innovative technologies, a data-driven strategy and, perhaps above all, excellent medical management.

It is this biomedical management expertise that we seek to share with our international students through our new International Med-Tech Innovation program, so that they in turn can share principles of best practice with their peers in their home countries.

Curriculum

Israel’s first such university MBA program, the Hebrew University Business School Med-Tech Innovation MBA is a feeder for C-level managers into corporations, mid-size companies and start-ups in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, and hospital laboratory research.

Designed in cooperation with industry leaders, this practical and relevant program has academic, industrial and business knowledge integrated throughout. Students also benefit from several value-added elements, such as professional internships with leading biomedical professionals, learning from and networking with internationally acclaimed experts, and exposure to new technologies spinning out from leading hospitals in Israel.

The Hebrew Univesity Business School has created a practical, relevant and up-to-date Med-Tech Innovation program to teach and train the future leadership and management of companies, across the spectrum of the biomedical sector.

Bridging the gap between academia and industry, we give students the tools they need to manage and lead biomedical companies and avoid costly mistakes. Taught by top international experts, who share their academic and practical knowledge about how to manage biomedical research, from start to finish, the program covers subjects such as:

Entrepreneurship

Finance

Digital Health & Healthcare IT

Knowledge Management & Intellectual Property

Bio-Design

Quality Assurance

Regulatory Compliance

The Med-Tech Innovation program is a fully-immersive one-year accelerated program. Credits are taken over three consecutive semesters, with the first two semesters including a professional internship, and the optional extra TIP program running through the summer semester. By the end, you will have an internationally accredited MBA degree from Israel’s highest rank university

Internships

One of the main goals of our international Med-Tech Innovation program is to give students practical experience in applying theoretical and analytical concepts to real-life business challenges. To this end, students take part in two types of internship project as part of the course:

  • with a venture capitalist who has proven evidence of successful investments in entrepreneurship and innovation companies (semester 1); and
  • at a startup, funded by the venture capitalist, that is currently in the process of developing a business strategy (semester 2).

Twice a week between October and July, students visit one of the organizations with which the Hebrew University Business School collaborates, taking part in organizational tasks and procedures, such as financial analyses, business strategy building, marketing, research and development etc.

Interns also meet regularly with the internship coordinator at the University, taking part in interactive soft skills workshops where they receive guidance in writing their resume, self-presentation, using LinkedIn etc.; and monthly evaluations where they discuss and analyze their intern experience, using theoretical frameworks from business studies and providing meaningful links between theory and practice.

To apply for an internship, students must meet with the internship coordinator prior to the beginning of the academic year and undergo personal interviews.

The internship is worth 4 credits.

Optional Extra: Trans-disciplinary Innovation Program (TIP)

In the summer semester, students undergo a uniquely practical, intensive four to six-week program that we call the Trans-disciplinary Innovation Program (TIP), for which they receive 6 credits towards their MBA.

The first four weeks of TIP cover a world-class curriculum that includes: computer vision, big-data/cyber, bioengineering and entrepreneurship. This is followed by a week focused on special themes in space and design and two weeks dedicated to projects. All this culminates in a final event where students have the opportunity to actually pitch ideas to a panel of real investors and accelerators.

Teaching is carried out through lectures, workshops, behind-the-scenes tours of emerging startups, on-site visits to major technology companies and interactive fireside group discussions with experienced angel investors and VCs.
